Anyone know how to do this? I'm not giving away the secret just yet, but listen to the attached MP3 and see if you can do it. First, Datjirri plays his normal style, then talks a little bit before playing Muykandi. There are also examples of this style on old vinyl LPs, can't remember which ones though...

Hey excellent :-)
I guess the "Hii" sound comes out from the nose ?
I'll give it a try :-)
Edit :
Hey yes it works !
Its a strange movement to get, but once it's fetched its ok !
I didn't manage to do the hich-pitched pigeon-voice at first.
Started with a dog's WOF !
Then raised the pitch.
It made my 1 year-old son burst into great laughter... too bad I didn't record it but he was in my arms and I couldn't do all the pugging.

I am going out on a limb and say that he is pausing and saying "Hee". Like a pause when you trumpet but this phrase instead. He is quick but he does sound like he is pausing.

The sound is clearly comming from outside the didj... It's not as if he's saying "Hee" in the yidaki.
And the pause is too short for him to take the yidaki off and on his mouth.
In fact, there is merely anypause at all.
He sings through his nose while the air is still comming out of his vibratig lips.
Its the equivalent to a "dingo-bark" except it's done from the nose and high-pitched.

In fact, it's not that hard to reproduce once you get it.
Only I never thought this could be done before :D
Thanks Guan for that post and discovery !!!
Also awaiting your answer ... confirmation or not.

Hey here is my try at this style > LINK < :D
The nasal-scream is not as clear as Datjirri's... more of a muffled "Hmmm" than a clear "Heee" but I'm just begining
Its quite amazing how his "Hee" sounds clear in fact... is it REALLY from the nose ?
Guan ?

Edit : gotta upload le LINK's target (right clik) and open it... it doesn't seem to play well if only left-cliked...

Yes, it's through the nose. I've got this on an old recording - think it might be on Moyle's Songs of the Northern Territory, but can't remember.

I used to do this a few years ago and remember it being found quite funny by those listening. I reckon Datjirri's calls might be so clear as they're quite long in duration.

I'm pleased to hear you still playing and still able to do this Guan !! I never did get it BTW.

"There are also examples of this style on old vinyl LPs, can't remember which ones though..."

Moyles' 'Land of the Morning Star' I think - Muykandi is a bird isn't it ? "Little black bird" I think the cover says - "Murrkundi", played by Murdpu.

I second Eric's idea on that. Seems like this sound comes out of his mouth. He is pausing for sure and when he does so, he neither buzzes his lips nor blows into the didg. Just makes the sound and carries on. Well, this is at least what I think is happening.

It's through the nose - the lips stop when the vocal comes through which is why you think that the sound is coming from his mouth. It's like the cirucular breath cycle except that the vocal, when released through the nose, does not allow the oral cavity to be shut off hence the lack of drone. Try it out and you'll see what I mean.

It's very possible to keep the drone going on while nose-shouting though :-)

The old LP recording is on the Album "Tribal Music of Australia". I have it on cassette (if I can find it) copied from the LP of a mate of mine many years back. It is a great field recording.
If you take a look on manikay.com at
http://www.manikay.com/albums/tribalmusic.shtml
then it is the third song on track 7. The description is that it represents the dance of a small bird "Moi kandi".. and the squeak is made by the "puller" while playing the didge. Indeed, if you listen carefully to Datjirri the didge is still sounding during the squeak, even though the sound does fade, probably as the air in his mouth runs out. I used to do this more often, and will put up a recording tomorrow morning.
cheers, M
